eShrug

eShrug Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

eShrug is used to convey indifference, uncertainty, or a lack of knowledge about a particular topic. It's the digital equivalent of the classic shrug gesture (¯\_(ツ)_/¯), expressing sentiments like 'I don't know,' 'I don't care,' 'whatever,' or 'it is what it is.' The emote can also be used to express mild confusion, ambivalence, or a casual dismissal of something that doesn't warrant a strong reaction.

Origin

eShrug is a BetterTTV emote that originated from Twitch streamer Destiny (Steven Bonnell II). The emote was created around 2016 and features Destiny performing a shrug gesture while looking at the camera with a somewhat indifferent or uncertain expression. The 'e' prefix follows the naming convention used for many emotes associated with Destiny's community. The emote quickly gained popularity beyond Destiny's channel and became one of the most widely used BetterTTV emotes across Twitch.

When to use

eShrug is commonly used when:
