HUH

HUH Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

The HUH emote features Verne, a turtle character from the animated movie "Over the Hedge," with wide eyes, a slightly concerned expression, and an open mouth. This emote primarily conveys confusion, bewilderment, or surprise in response to something unexpected or strange happening on stream.

Origin

Contrary to common misconception, HUH is not a cat but a turtle character named Verne from the 2006 DreamWorks animated film "Over the Hedge." The emote was first added to 7TV on September 15, 2021, by the user PentalexLive. Shortly after, on September 20, 2021, it was also added to FrankerFacez by the user hyruverse.

The emote gained significant popularity after being added to xQc's Twitch chat on March 31, 2022, replacing the uncommonly used VaN emote. Within a year of being uploaded, the HUH emote was being used in over 4,000 Twitch channels, demonstrating its rapid rise to popularity in the Twitch community.

When to use

The HUH emote is typically used in the following contexts:

  • When a streamer says something unexpected or confusing
  • When something strange or bizarre occurs during gameplay
  • When a streamer tells an unusual story to chat
  • As a reaction to bewildering moments in a stream

After gaining popularity, some viewers began combining it with the TikTok snoring meme "AUUGGHH." While occasionally used as a reaction to sexual content mentioned on stream, most users prefer the original meaning of confusion or bewilderment.
