HUH

HUH Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

The HUH emote features Verne, the turtle character from the animated movie "Over the Hedge," with wide eyes, an open mouth, and a shocked expression. It primarily conveys confusion, bewilderment, or surprise in response to something unexpected or strange happening during a stream.

Origin

The HUH emote was first added to 7TV on September 15, 2021, by user PentalexLive, and was later added to FrankerFacez by user hyruverse on September 20, 2021. While its exact creation story is somewhat unclear, the emote gained significant popularity when it was added to xQc's Twitch chat on March 31, 2022, replacing the uncommonly used VaN emote. This addition to one of Twitch's largest communities helped propel HUH to greater visibility across the platform. Within a year of being uploaded, the emote was being used in over 4,000 Twitch channels, earning it the nickname "The New King of Twitch Emotes."

When to use

The HUH emote is commonly used in the following situations:

  • When viewers are confused by something happening during gameplay or when a streamer shares an unusual story
  • In xQc's chat, it became associated with the TikTok snoring meme "AUUGGHH"
  • As a reaction when something sexual or inappropriate is said on stream
  • When streamers say something surprising or "out of pocket"
  • To express general bewilderment at unexpected events or statements during a stream

The emote has evolved to have numerous variations featuring the same character in different forms, including a green snake, lizard, frog, and other creatures, which has helped maintain its popularity.
