Kapp

Kapp Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

Kapp is used to indicate sarcasm, irony, or trolling in Twitch chat. Like its parent emote Kappa, it signals that the preceding or following statement should not be taken seriously. It's essentially a way to convey a smirk or indicate that someone is joking, lying, or being facetious. The emote represents a knowing, slightly mischievous expression that communicates 'I'm not being serious right now.'

Origin

Kapp is a variation of the famous Kappa emote, which originated from a photo of Josh DeSeno, a former Justin.tv employee. The original Kappa emote was added to Twitch in 2011 and became one of the platform's most iconic emotes. Kapp, specifically, is a cropped or modified version that focuses on just the face portion, removing some of the original image's context. It emerged as streamers and communities created their own variations of the classic Kappa emote.

When to use

Kapp is commonly used when: (1) A streamer makes an obviously false or exaggerated claim, (2) Someone in chat is being sarcastic or making a joke, (3) A streamer pretends they didn't make a mistake or blames something else, (4) During moments of playful deception or when someone is 'capping' (lying), (5) As a response to unlikely promises or predictions. It's particularly popular in competitive gaming streams where players might make excuses or sarcastic comments about their performance.
