Madge

Madge Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

The Madge emote is a variant of Pepe the Frog characterized by an angry, annoyed, or frustrated expression. The emote features Pepe with furrowed brows and a displeased look, typically shown with a green face and blue shirt. It's used to express mild anger, frustration, or disappointment in response to events happening on stream.

Origin

Madge is derived from Pepe the Frog, a character originally created by Matt Furie in his 2005 comic series "Boy's Club." Like many Pepe variants, Madge evolved through internet meme culture, spreading across platforms like 4chan and Reddit before becoming popular on Twitch.

Madge follows other popular Pepe-derived emotes such as Sadge (added to BetterTTV in January 2020) and Pepega (created in April 2018). While the exact date of Madge's first appearance on 7TV or BTTV isn't precisely documented, it emerged as part of the family of emotion-expressing Pepe emotes that became widespread on Twitch in the late 2010s and early 2020s.

When to use

Madge is commonly used in Twitch chat in the following situations:

  • When a streamer makes a mistake or poor decision during gameplay
  • When something unfair or frustrating happens during a stream
  • To express disagreement with something the streamer or another chatter has said
  • In response to technical difficulties or stream issues
  • When viewers feel slightly annoyed or irritated by something
  • As a reaction to disappointing news or announcements

The emote serves as a quick visual way to express mild anger or frustration without typing out a full message, making it an efficient communication tool in fast-moving Twitch chats.
