Modge

Modge Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

Modge is used to express deep thought, contemplation, or pondering about something said in chat or happening on stream. It conveys a sense of 'thinking deeply' or 'considering something carefully.' The emote can be used both genuinely when viewers are actually thinking about something complex, or ironically/sarcastically to mock overthinking simple situations or to suggest someone is pretending to think deeply about something trivial. It's essentially the Pepe version of the 'thinking' emoji but with more Twitch culture context.

Origin

Modge is a variant of the popular Pepe the Frog meme that depicts the character in a contemplative, thinking pose similar to Rodin's 'The Thinker' sculpture. The emote shows Pepe sitting hunched over with his hand on his chin in a pondering position, rendered in a green color scheme. This specific variant became popular on Twitch and was added to various third-party emote platforms like BetterTTV, FrankerFaceZ, and 7TV in the late 2010s. The 'Modge' name is a play on words combining 'mod' (moderator) with the '-dge' sound, though it's used by all chatters, not just moderators. It gained widespread adoption across Twitch channels around 2018-2019 as part of the broader Pepe emote family.

When to use

Modge is commonly used when: streamers pose philosophical questions or complex scenarios that require thought; someone in chat says something that requires consideration or analysis; viewers want to sarcastically indicate they're 'thinking very hard' about something simple; during puzzle games or strategy games when the streamer is making decisions; when chat is collectively trying to figure something out; or ironically when someone says something obviously wrong or stupid, suggesting mock contemplation of their statement. It's particularly popular in gaming streams during decision-making moments and in Just Chatting streams during discussions.
