PepeLaugh

PepeLaugh Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

PepeLaugh is a popular Twitch emote depicting Pepe the Frog with a wide grin and teary eyes. It's used to express intense laughter, similar to the LUL emote or crying laughing emoji. The emote shows Pepe with a mischievous expression, suggesting someone is laughing hard enough to cry, often at someone else's expense or in anticipation of something funny about to happen.

Origin

PepeLaugh originated from the Pepe the Frog character created by Matt Furie for his comic "Boy's Club" in 2005. The specific PepeLaugh variant first appeared on 4chan's /pol/ board on August 13, 2014. After gaining popularity on 4chan, it was added to the FrankerFaceZ database on November 14, 2015, and was officially uploaded to FrankerFaceZ in 2017.

The emote gained significant traction in the Twitch community through third-party extensions like BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ. By February 2019, PepeLaugh was being used by more than 1,300 channels on the BetterTTV database. On July 10, 2018, user pajlada submitted a higher quality version of the emote to FrankerFaceZ, which further boosted its popularity.

When to use

PepeLaugh is commonly used in the following contexts:

  • When viewers anticipate something funny or unfortunate about to happen to a streamer (often accompanied by the phrase "Here It Comes")
  • When someone is unaware of information that others find amusing (often with "HE DOESN'T KNOW")
  • To express schadenfreude - taking pleasure in someone else's misfortune
  • When reacting to fails or mistakes in gameplay
  • Often accompanied by phrases like "OH NO NO NO" when something particularly amusing is about to unfold

The emote is especially popular in gaming channels and has become one of the most widely used emotes on Twitch for expressing gleeful laughter.
