Something about having your own custom animated emotes for your Twitch stream really makes everything feel more professional. It adds to your brand, it’s good for your community and it could make your whole stream more recognizable. Here’s how you can make your own animated emotes for free.

How to create custom animated emotes for Twitch

  • First, go to our Emotes page.
  • Enter the Twitch clip URL or upload an image from your computer files. Most commonly used video files will be accepted.
  • Crop your image and select which 60 frames (or less) you want to make the emote of.
  • You can now preview how your emote will look on various platforms – and how it will look in the Twitch chat, both in light and dark mode.
  • Hit Export (you can choose between Twitch, 7TV and BTTV).

Congrats, you’ve just made your own animated emote! You can now download the emote or copy the link for further use.

How to add your own emotes

If you are a Twitch partner or affiliate, you can upload your own custom emotes directly to Twitch. You can also upload your own emotes with browser add-ons like BTTV or 7TV – people that also have these add-ons installed will then be able to see your custom emotes.

Uploading your emotes to Twitch

  • Click on your profile on the top right corner and select Creator Dashboard from the drop down menu.
  • Select Emotes on the left and scroll down to ‘animated emotes’.
  • Hit the plus button. You can now add your own GIF or animate one of your existing emotes.
  • Once you’re happy with all of your settings, hit ‘Upload’.

And that’s it! Your emote should now appear in your animated emote overview.

Uploading your emotes to BTTV

  • Make sure you have the BTTV extension installed.
  • On Twitch, go to the bottom right corner and hit the Chat Settings button.
  • Select BetterTTV Settings and select the fourth tab down on the left – Emote Dashboard. Here you can see all of your emotes. You can also get to this dashboard by going to BetterTTV.com and selecting Dashboard, if you find that easier.
  • Select Upload Emote on the top right corner.
  • Fill in your setting and hit Upload Emote.

Your emote should now be added to your BTTV emote dashboard and ready to use!

Uploading your emotes to 7TV

  • Make sure you have the TV extension installed.
  • Go to 7tv and fill in your emote name, settings and upload your GIF file.
  • Once you’re happy with your settings, hit SUBMIT.
  • On Twitch, go to the bottom right corner and select 7TV Emotes.

Your custom animated emote should now be visible in your emote overview!
