TrollDespair

TrollDespair Twitch / Discord emote

Meaning

TrollDespair is a Twitch emote that depicts a despairing version of the classic Trollface meme. Unlike the original mischievous Trollface, TrollDespair shows the character in a state of sadness, disappointment, or existential dread. The emote is characterized by its black and white, somewhat grainy appearance with a downcast expression.

The emote is used to express feelings of disappointment, despair, or reaction to unfortunate circumstances. It's often employed when streamers or viewers encounter tragic, disappointing, or hopeless situations during streams.

Origin

TrollDespair originated from a variation of the classic Trollface meme that evolved through a series of videos posted in November 2020. These videos introduced an entity called "Trollge" and warned viewers to seek shelter, creating a darker version of the originally playful meme.

The emote gained significant popularity in early 2021 after a viral Reddit post that used the "Trollface Incident" meme format to narrate the story of Ninja's Times Square New Year's Eve floss fail. This post helped establish the meme format across platforms.

TrollDespair was officially added to FrankerFaceZ (FFZ) on March 16, 2021, by a user named "hazyymemory". From there, it spread to other Twitch emote extensions like 7TV and BetterTTV (BTTV), becoming a staple in the Twitch emote ecosystem.
